Water Missions International

Water Missions International (WMI) is a nonprofit Christian engineering organization based in Charleston. WMI's mission is to provide sustainable access to safe water and an opportunity to hear the "Living Water" message to people in developing countries and disaster areas.

Since 1998, WMI has made safe water available to over a million people in 24 countries. WMI is currently working in Honduras, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Kenya, and Uganda. In WMI's most recent disaster relief operations, safe water was made available to several thousand people on the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina and approximately 324,000 people in Indonesia and Sri Lanka after the tsunami.

The Global Water Crisis

Access to safe water is a global problem that has been called a "silent tsunami." Approximately 230,000 people were killed tragically in the tsunami that struck off the coast of Indonesia in 2004. That is the same number of children that die every nine days from water-related illnesses. An estimated 80% of the world's diseases are caused by contaminated or insufficient water supplies, inadequate sanitation facilities, and poor hygiene practices. More than a billion people have no access to safe water, and as a result they suffer from sickness, squalor, and enduring poverty.

The good news is that Water Missions International is making a difference. WMI's safe-water solutions bring immediate and lasting benefits in health, dignity, education, productivity, and income generation to some of the world's most marginalized and forgotten people.

Volunteer

WMI depends on the time and talents of volunteers. People with a variety of backgrounds and skills are frequently needed. Many volunteers help in the production center with assembling Living Water? Treatment System. Others provide support with day-to-day operations or special events.
