Youth Commission: A Great Way to Grow in Faith and Leadership Skills
From dioceseofsc.org, by Ann Claire Gaillard, former Youth Commission member
Serving on the Youth Commission is an incredible leadership opportunity that allows high school students who are mature in their faith to work and grow with other teenagers from across the diocese who have decided to serve the Lord with their whole hearts. The team of young people is formed each year to work with the leadership of the diocese’s youth ministry to put on four retreats and serve at the Diocesan Convention.
During retreats, the Youth Commission is responsible for a range of duties including setting up the worship and activity areas, leading aspects of the program, assisting with worship, leading small groups, and working behind the scenes to make the weekends run smoothly.
In the spring, students who aspire to be on Youth Commission for the following year apply through a selection process where they need to demonstrate the ability to articulate their faith and why they desire to serve. Serving on the Youth Commission is a high honor as not all who apply are selected.
While serving, students typically create deep friendships with peers who share a passion for the gospel and are able to encourage one another in their faith. I personally served on the Youth Commission for three years. Now in college, I remain strong friends with many of the people I served with over those years. Youth Commission is how I found my current college roommate. Youth Commission was a great way for me to grow in my knowledge and love of the Lord as well as form friendships with those who encourage me in my faith when I am struggling. I would strongly urge any teenagers desiring to grow in leadership skills, the knowledge of God, and their love of the Lord to consider applying to this program.
Interested youths apply by July 8 at diocesesofsc.org.
