February 24, 2019 Speaker: The Rt. Rev. C. Fitzsimons Allison

The Seventh Sunday After the Epiphany

February 24 – The Rt. Rev. Fitz Allison, preacher

Collect, Traditional (page 164)

O Lord, who hast taught us that all our doings without charity are nothing worth; Send thy Holy Ghost and pour into our hearts that most excellent gift of charity, the very bond of peace and of all virtue, without which whosoever  liveth is counted dead before thee. Grant this for thine only  Son Jesus Christ, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The First Lesson (10:30 only): Ecclesiastes 3:1-9

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace. What gain has the worker from his toil?

The Second Lesson: 2 Corinthians 1:2-7

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as we share abundantly in Christ's sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too. If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; and if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which you experience when you patiently endure the same sufferings that we suffer. Our hope for you is unshaken, for we know that as you share in our sufferings, you will also share in our comfort.

The Gospel: John 16:6-15

Jesus said, “Because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. 12 I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”

Psalm 145:1-9 (the first lesson at the 8:15 service)

1 I will extol you, my God and King,     and bless your name forever and ever. Every day I will bless you     and praise your name forever and ever. Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised,     and his greatness is unsearchable.

One generation shall commend your works to another,     and shall declare your mighty acts. On the glorious splendor of your majesty,     and on your wondrous works, I will meditate. They shall speak of the might of your awesome deeds,     and I will declare your greatness. They shall pour forth the fame of your abundant goodness     and shall sing aloud of your righteousness.

The Lord is gracious and merciful,     slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. The Lord is good to all,     and his mercy is over all that he has made.
