News--Walk for Water 2023

The 2023 Walk for Water ~ Saturday, March 25, 2023

Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” ––John 4:13-14

On a windy, sunny, gorgeous Saturday, 140+ St. Philippians walked for water. The seventeenth annual Walk for Water supporting Water Mission, one of St. Philip’s home and world mission ministry partners, raised almost $500,000.00 by almost 5,000 walkers, of whom we made up two percent.

As I was carrying the St. Philip’s banner into Riverfront Park that morning, one of George Greene’s grandsons saw me, gave me the thumbs up, and said, “That’s the best team!” Both he and we may be biased.

Supporting the Greene family’s mission of providing safe drinking water to those in need, we walked, talked, carried buckets, and acknowledged just how good we have it. Knowing that a three-mile walk from the Riverfront Park along the Cooper is not the same as the average three-mile walk so many women and children make just to find water, we still carried our buckets with honor.

Each of your clergy members, and some retired clergy members, were there in force. Brian McGreevy even had Walk for Water socks. St. Philip’s youth were out in force, too. Luckily, they were able to carry our banner. Onward, Christian Soldiers! See His banner go!

After the walk, my family and I went to collect our banner at our tent. As we approached, the wind kicked up and our banner listed to port and almost touched the ground. The ladies in the adjacent tent quickly stood up to grab the banner, saying as they righted it, “Jesus must not fall!”

Hope to see you all next year at the Walk for Water.
