Encouragement for the Enlisted
The Compassion Committee of St. Philip’s would like to share with all of you a powerful and important new component of our ministry that was born from one of our church’s recent Spiritual Gifts workshops. After learning about her gifts of encouragement and faith, along with some complementary gifts, Ann Hunley Harrington asked us about joining one of our note-writing teams.
Shortly after she enthusiastically joined, she said she had an idea! She asked if it would be all right for her to write to the young men and women on our prayer list who are enlisted in our country’s armed forces. Thus began a ministry of note-writing to these brave men and women.
To accomplish this, Ann has contacted friends, parents, grandparents, wives, and husbands to get mailing addresses and emails. She has sent general notes of encouragement, additional notes when she hears of a specific deployment or trial, birthday cards, cards on Veterans Day and other holidays, and cards to their children at home. She has even found out from loved ones about Bible verses that are special to them and included them in her notes. For Veterans Day, she also sent cards to military spouses because, she says, they serve our country, too. She has mailed notes to military posts and military hospitals all over the United States as well as APO addresses in the Middle East.
In such times of unrest and spiritual challenges in our country, we are so grateful for her uplifting and encouraging messages to those serving our country. Don’t you know that this is the Holy Spirit working right here in our St. Philip’s? We ask for your prayers for Ann as she reaches out to these brave young people, for your continued prayers for our members serving in our military, and for our country.
