At the announcements during the 10:30 service on Sunday, May 11, campaign co-chair Maybank Hagood, flanked by co-chairs Karen Phillips and Martha Freshley, took to the eagle to share that a few days earlier, the campaign had raised pledges and donations surpassing that mark. The congregation responded with a very enthusiastic round of applause....

When my daughter and son-in-law announced in May of 2021 that they were moving to Seattle with my then almost-one-year-old granddaughter, I was both happy for them and sad for me. It was a great opportunity for them and a chance to explore a new area of this beautiful country we live in, but it really posed great consternation for me and my husband. They had been living near Columbia, and we had gotten plenty of opportunities to spend time with them and our newest granddaughter. ...

Keep ReadingIt was another weekend of beautiful Advent traditions at St. Philip’s as volunteers arrived in droves on Friday, December 9, to “green” the church in preparation for the much-beloved Lessons and Carols service on Sunday. With the support and guidance of the ECW and Flower Guild, parishioners hung garland and wreaths, strung lights, arranged greenery in window boxes, ...

Keep ReadingJohn thinks, writes, and speaks for a living. His journey has been an eclectic one. Starting out as the singer-songwriter for the 90s rock band In the Silence, he now works as an author and academic with a busy international speaking schedule (occasionally dabbling in his love of music). John is committed to delivering creative, engaging content, grounded in careful ...
Keep ReadingEvangelism. Up until one week ago, I was scared of that word. It carries so much meaning, so much responsibility. On Sunday, January 20, Canon J.John came and spoke at the Rector’s Forum and preached that morning. While I was unable to hear his talk at the Rector’s Forum (I’m definitely listening to it this week!), I heard his sermon. It was so spirit-filling and en...

Keep ReadingOn Saturday, December 7, Church St. was a parade of festively dressed folks as St. Philippians made their way to the rectory for this year’s Advent drop-in. All the elements that we have come to expect from the past couple of years were in place: plenty of egg nog; live garland on the mantles and banisters; baked brie, meatballs, pimento cheese, and lots of other goodies...
Keep ReadingOn a recent November mid-week, a small group of St. Philippians traveled up to the glorious mountains of North Carolina to attend a much-touted (by our beloved priest and C.S. Lewis aficionado, Brian McGreevy ) C.S. Lewis symposium. The conference was a packed time filled with insights and sharing to encourage us and engage us on our Christian journey. People from 28 state...
